Troubleshooting for Saltwater tanks

Question
The type of tank is an Oceanic 55, so the filter system and everything is already built in. We tried to figure out that information, but all we could find was that everything was all built in. We had no instruction as to what kind of filter was built in or anything like that. All we know is the type of marine system that we have and that everything is built in. Thank you for your help!

Question -
I recently started up a new tank, one that had been previously maintained before. After putting in the salt and turning everything on, the tank began to smell and also was squeaking. My partner and I couldn't figure out what may be wrong. One thing we noticed, however, is that the water in the main tank should be higher than the water in the filtration area, but both levels are the same. We do not know how to release some of the water in the filtration area, keeping the level the same in the main level. Please help!

Amy,
Any idea who the filter manufacturer is?  Your desciption of the system is pretty vague so I'm not quite sure what to tell you.
If you can find the manufacturer name and model number you might even be able to contact them for directions, etc.
I would venture a guess that the squeaking sound is the filter.
As for the smell... most likely the tank wasn't completely cleaned out when it was torn down and you're getting some funk from the decaying material in the filter and tank.  In time it will pass, but you might want to add a high quality carbon like Two Little Fishies HydroCarbon2 to the filter to help absorb the smell and any color in the water.

Best of luck with the tank!

Answer
Amy,
Oceanic makes their wet/dry filters separate from their protein skimmers so you might want to have someone check it to see that you have everything you need.  I wouldn't just assume that since it was once set up salt water that it was set up properly.

Best of luck with the tank!
