Question
Salutations, Tyler!

I recently bought a sw aquarium. 14g Oceanic Biocube with already est. LR, a peacock mantis shrimp, a damsel fish, a turbo snail, some soft corals and 4 mushrooms. in the past few weeks, the mushrooms have not only begun multiplying, but are also BIG. one is a good 3" in diameter and i'm afraid they're going to beegin to overcrowd the other corals and/or themselves.  i have a smaller rock in the tank where i relocated one of the baby mushies, but i think if i moved a bigger one over there, it would just block all the light from the baby and be too big for it anyway. so i guess my question is: what do you suggest?

i'm VERY new to this, so any and all advice is more than welcome =)

Answer
Hey Sierra!

You have a few options. If theyre attached to one piece of rock, you could use a hammer and chisel to break the rock up and get the large mushroom alone, and move the large mushroom somewhere else in the tank. You could also frag it. Fragging is where you cut the coral, and get pieces of it. you then attach the new pieces to a small piece of live rock or a coral plug (a little holder for the frag). You can glue the frag with special glue, or tie it with elastics.

Personally, i would say frag it, mushrooms are pretty forgiving for first time fraggers mistakes. You can go to a local reef club or meet people to swap frags. Once you get a good colony going, you can make good trades and money by selling frags. You can also keep the frags for yourself and move them around in the tank

This site has good info on fragging shrooms. If you have anymore questions, i would be more than happy to answer them!
