Planaria?

Question
Chris-
 I just read your response to Justin regarding the white worms in his tank.  I think my tank may have the same thing, but they don't look like planaria I remember from Biology.  They are about 1cm long and are mostly free-floating (sometimes they cling to the side and crawl around - they look like inchworms when they move).  They don't appear to be harming my fish, but their numbers are a concern.  They are multiplying!  What do you recommend?
Thanks!
Erich

Answer
Hi Erich;

They are probably some kind of harmless nematode feeding on excess waste. You have to remove their food source and they will slowly go away. Vacuum the gravel every week for awhile and cut way back on feeding. You may see more of them at first as they try to find more food but they will eventually starve out.
