Question
ok i will answer your ?'s first i have a 29 gallon freshwater tank with Mollies guppies platys. i have about 15 in all.i have a whisper filter for a 30-40 gallon tank and i always check my levels everything is fine but the hardness level which i cant really do anything about that... i change my water every week 20 percent but once in a great while i will do it every 2 weeks,but usually every week..also my tank has been set up now for 2 months.....ok i think that is everything...now my question is i have a molly that is white and has orange only on the top of her, she is huge, her belly is square and has been this way for almost 2 weeks now...i know about gravid spots and how they turn black but i have monitored this molly and her gravid spot is very orange and has black spots in it which i assume this is the babies now she has been this way for a while and i was told that her gravid spot doesn't have to be black that this is probably the color of her babies is this true??in the beginning i could actually see the unfertilized eggs in her belly now i cant, and just like 3 days ago(i will try my best to explain this)she has what looks like to be a tiny tiny white tube coming out of her where the babies come out this is opened a little and moves quite a bit...she shows no signs of labor she eats fine and she swims alot and isn't hiding at all so i don't know what to do!!!what is this white thing that has come out near her anal fins does this mean she is close to delivering her babies??please please let me know if you know what this is....

Answer
Hi Chasity;

The color of her gravid spot will indeed be the color of her babies. They are probably a very light color. It sounds like she is ready any day now. The "tube" is an indication that the time is near. Give her vegies to help her digestion so she doesn't have constipation and it doesn't complicate delivery in any way. The other fish will like them too. Too much dried food for any fish isn't healthy. I like to feed them 3 times a week like cooked green beans, cooked and peeled green peas, romaine lettuce pieces, slices of cucumber and squash and slightly cooked shredded carrots. Just rinse and drop them in.

Good luck!
