moving fish to another tank

Question
I have 6 zebra danios in a quarantine tank and I want to move them to my 32 gallon.I want to know what is the best way for me to do this?  I know that I have to acclimatize them and I know how to do that part of it but unlike when I get new fish from the petshop I don't have a plastic bag to put them in.  Should I just get a plastic bag from them or is there another way that I can do this?

Answer
Hi Kerry;

If you have a glass jar it would work just fine. I would use anything that holds about 2 cups of water. Fill it halfway with their own tank water and cover the jar with a lid that has a hole in it. Try to prop it up at the top of the tank somehow so it won't sink down. I have used rubberbands, string, ribbon, duct tape, etc. Whatever will hold it in place for 10 to 15 minutes while the temperature equalizes is fine. Mixomg a little bit of the new tank water in the jar a couple of times during the 10-15 minutes is good too. When it's time to release them into the new tank, net them out and throw away the old water in the jar.

Avoid using plastic containers other than something brand new in your aqarium. If they were ever washed in soap or detergent they can hold some of that and leach it out into the tank. Plastic is actually porous so cleaners and detergents can soak in and can't be rinsed out.
