Question
I  own a 5 gallon aquarium, which recently was home to my Beta.  Since the Beta has died I have been thinking about getting some colorful and friendly freshwater fish to put in my tank.  Do you have any suggestions of fish that are both colorful and will thrive well together in a tank of that size?

Sincerely,
Kim

Answer
Hey Kim,

Guppies!

Guppy males are often more colorful then females, but a nice mix of 2 females and 1 male in your five gallon tank will make a very nice display. They're also very easy to breed in that setup. With females out numbering males, you're bound to get breeding going on in no time! If you dont want to breed, start out with one male for about a month, then add two more, wait three weeks and add 2 more. Thats all you get in such a small tank, though! only 5 fish.

Hope that helps you out, if guppies aren't your fancy, try a pair of platy! A nice neon pair of platy would be a blue / red splash of color, and you can house 2 in a 5 gallon tank safely.

Not too much fits in a 5 gallon bucket, and perhaps another betta would be a good idea? Best wishes, and good luck!
