Question
QUESTION: hey!

A couple days ago before i went away i look at one of my pregnat guppies and it
had this mole like thing coming out of the side of her belly. i have no idea if its
contagious or harmless but i would like to know, thanks!

ANSWER: Hi Braeden,
By 'mole like thing', do you mean a black dot that increases with size, as the guppy gets further into pregnancy?

That's the gravid spot. A gravid spot comes out, a bit like an indicator of pregnancy. All female guppies will have this when they are pregnant, although some are harder to see. It's 100% normal, don't worry. It's completely harmless. In a week or so, the guppy should give birth to new guppy fry, anywhere from 5-40! The only thing that you should worry about is that after pregnancy, the female may become very stressed. Monitor her closely, to make sure she isn't getting bullied.

QUESTION: I know about the gravid spot and she had her babies last week she is in a tank with all females so she can't be bullied and the spot is on th side of the tummy. i was saying mole like thing because it looks like almost a mole taken off the human and placed on the fish. it is pink and black and is coming out of the body. I know this is not normal!!

Answer
Hi Braeden,
I'm sorry, I misunderstood the question.
Without a picture, it's impossible to tell, but it could be a goiter tumor. The goiters are pink and black, and form on the body, usually near the gills. These tumors are caused by a lack of iodine, which is a necessary nutrient, in food. Make sure you feed the guppies a varied diet, and purchase a fish multivitamin, such as sera's Fishtamin. If you feed the fish a food containing iodine, the tumor will naturally recess after a month or two.

Hope the guppy recovers!
