Oh no, Ive added too much ammonia!!! What do I do now??

Question
I just read a past answer of yours to someone about not putting in more ammonia than 5ppm.  I accidentally put in too much a few nights ago and now even tho' I've put a lot of bacteria in from our existing large goldfish tank, they're probably dead now right?  The bacteria I mean.

The reading of the ammonia level was at least at the highest colour in the greens so I guess I've blown it big time.  What do I do now?  A water change?

Please help.  I don't want to wait until Christmas to get tropical fish in my 29 gallon.  Thanks so much.

Answer
Hi Paula,
I dont think it will kill the bacteria unless you greatly overdose.  But an ammonia higher than 5ppm will just stall the cycling process.  Bacteria wont be able to function, but I dont believe they will die.  I would do a partial water change to lower it down to 5ppm.
