Airated Sponge Filters

Question
Hallo Karen.

1.)Do you need to clean aerated sponge filters, these are those sponge filters where a airpump tube goes into the filter and then the air filters trough the sponge filters, where nitrifying bacteria build up on. I read on the packaging that you must not clean these filters. And I also read it somewhere on the net. What do you think about this? It says that you will harm some of the bacteria on these sponge filters? Please advise me on this. You can go check out these filters hagen has a single or double sponge filters on there website.
2.) I just want to findout I've it is fine that when I do my water changes on a Monday and a Thursday, that after I have cleaned the tank I dont feed my fishes those two specific nights. I am just doing that so that there are not extra waste after doing my water changes. And I also think it is a good idea not to feed them sometimes. Like I wont feed them for a whole day so that they can cleanse there systems. DO you think it is a good idea?

Thanks for your help.
Regards
Hannes Viviers.

Answer
Dear Hannes,
1.) Sure, you must certainly clean sponge filters on occasion. Since they can easily become clogged and lose their ability to filter. It's true, Sponge filters provide homes for millions of bacteria and it's important to never destroy all these bacteria when you clean your filter. But just take some aquarium water in a fish-safe bucket or pitcher and lightly rinse it and squeeze the dirty sponge in the water until it is clean again and that is all that is needed.
2.)It's fine to skip a day of not feeding your fish as this does help clean out their systems, and many fish are not always hungry because they may find algae or tiny microscopic animals in the aquarium to nibble on all day. Most fish also seem to thrive in many small feedings a day rather than 1-2 large feedings. This also helps keep the water cleaner.

I really hope this helps!
Best wishes and Take care,
Karen~
