Question
Hi. I have recently bought my first tropical tank which is 60 litres. i was advised by the fish store that mollies would be a good starter for me so after the water was tested Ok i bought two silver mollies, 1 male, 1 female. They appear to be Ok and are feeding well. My only concern is that they constantly chase each other around the tank and never seem to stop. Is this normal?? Are they happy? Are they hungry? I would appreciate some advice.

Answer
Hi,
Unless they appear to be biting one another and their fins are becoming ripped or ragged, don't worry about it. It is normal for them to chase each other around a lot, although constant chasing could signal one of two things: stress, or an urge to mate. to make sure it is not the former, put a backing on the tank if you have not already done so and keep the tank in a quiet place away from loud sources of noise. If it persists, I think you should take the one who does the most of the chasing, back to the fish shop. You can, if you want, purchase another one.
As Mollies are very, very rarely cannibalistic, I would doubt they are chasing each other because they are hungry.

Mollies are livebearers, and very prolific breeders, so you may soon end up with lots of fry (babies)!
If you have any more questions at all, please feel free to ask.

Best of luck,
