Question
QUESTION: Hi, you had recently answered a question for me regarding my one female yellow lab.  I have just purchased and am in the process of cycling a new 55g tank to move her to.  I know that aggression comes with the territory when keeping malawis but I would like to keep the tank as peaceful as possible.  I need some help with stocking.  I would love a few more yellows if that is possible but am unsure about what would work well with them and how many to get.

Thanks so much!
ANSWER: Hello Jessica. I do remember you.
Once your 55 is cycled, I would limit the amount of Cichlids to 12.
Good tank mates for Yellow Labs are Electric Blue Ahli and Powder Blue Scolofi.
I would try to get one male and 3 females of each, or else all males if you want lots of color.
You could do all yellows also. Then you know you would have the best chance of breeding.
I like a little different colors though.
let me know what you decide and I hope this helped!

QUESTION: Thanks for the suggestions.  I have looked up the elec. blue and the scolofi and I really like the look of both of them.  The only concern I have is aggression, they are frequently talked about as being a very aggressive species.  What do you think?
Are there any other blues that would be a bit more mild mannered?  Acei? Kenyi?
Also, can you have an all male or all female tank?? I am not interested at all in breeding and I don't want to have a population that I continually have to keep in check.
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Jessica,
You can't really go by what is said about aggression too much. The electric yellow lab is one of the most peaceful fish, yet I have one that rules the tank! My Ahli is as quiet as anything.
If it concerns you, then you could have an electric blue Johanni, they are nice.
Acei are real nice too but not from Lake Malawi, and that could be a problem.
The Kennyi are real pretty if they are females. They are one of the only fish that the female has all the color.
As far as all male or all female?
Sure. All males would be the most colorful. No matter what you decide, you will need lots of caves and hiding spaces.
All cichlids tend to get aggressive from time to time.
You can help aggression with slightly lower water temps, like 79 instead of 82, and you could also feed them like I do to help.
The general rule for feeding is as much as they eat in 2 minutes, 3 times a day. I give them less food, but 6 times a day.
Not sure if I told you that already. If I did, I apologize for repeating.
