50 gallon tank with NO FISH!

Question
I am about to get a 50 gallon tank. I have absolutely no idea what kind of fish to put in it. I am considering 3-5 neon tetras and possibly a bronze Cory. I don't want any to breed. I considered danios, guppies, platys, Mollies, and a bunch other but i just can't decide! Do you have any suggestions?

Answer
Hi,
Tetras of any type like to be in groups, the bigger the better. The minimum is 6. So, you can have any type of Tetras, as they stay quite small, and Bronze Cories do too. They also like to be in groups, so get at least 4 of those.

Different fish like different water, so I recommend buying a pH test. Test the pH of your tap water. If it is under 7.0, you should be looking for fish that like acidic water, such as Tetras, Cichlids etc. If it is over 7.0, you should be looking for fish that like alkaline water, like Mollies, Platies and Guppies. Most fish will live in water slightly different to that they would prefer. For example, an acidic-loving fish can usually live in slightly alkaline water.

Anyway: My personal favourite fish are Blue Rams, Gouramies (Honey, Dwarf, Blue Gouramies)Corydoras (especially Panda Corydoras) and Tetras (Lemon, Neon, Cardinal, Black Phantom, Red Phantom, Ember, Emerald, Emperor, Red Flame, Congo... there are LOADS!). These are all suitable. All the ones you suggested are suitable too.
There are millions of different fish, so I recommend looking for fish you like, making a list, and telling me them all. Don't worry if there are loads, the more, the better. I will then tell you which are suitable and why.

Remember, before adding fish, you will need to cycle your tank. If you don't know what I mean, tell me and I'll explain fully.

Hoping to hear back from you soon.
Best of luck,
Kathryn
