Question
I have had my male beta fish since late October.  I currently got a 5 gallon tank with a filter and a light.  I want to put my male beta fish with other fish, but I am not sure what type of fish and how many. My friend had a mini cat fish with hers for a while, but it died five months after. She said that it was sick and its fins were bleeding.   She also had a frog that died a day later. I also researched other websites. They said that Platies are good, as well as Mollies, and Swordtail and tetras. But I read that tetras are fin nippers and the beta will get angered by the tetra.  And I also read that guppies are good, but you can't get the ones with large tails.  I am not sure which is correct. I want to get different types of fish. And I saw a Mickey Mouse Platies which looked pretty.  Which fish do you suggest and how many that will get along with a male beta?

Answer
My own male betta seems to like the company of Blood Fins. Mollies are also good but they get sick easily and could infect the betta. Sissor Tails are also nice but they pick at the fins. Catfish and aquatic frogs work nice. But be careful the size of the frog, too small and another fish might eat him (my pleco ate mine. I still haven't found any bones).
I think blood fins and family members of blood fins work really good.
