white mould on log in new aquarium

Question
Hi, I have just got a new freshwater aquarium. I added a log with a plant, green ferm like plant, and water conditioner sorted the ph and left for 2 weeks. I then added 4 very small platies. After 2 days 1 platie died. I have notice there is white mould growing on the log is this a bad sign? The ph is 7 and ammonia level is 0 and I think it is too early for nitrate? Should I remove the log? How can I make sure my other new fish survive the 1st cycle?

Thanks for your help.

Kirsty

Answer
hey dude.

Well first off i dont know what that white mold could be honestly, i know there are some werid things in tanks but i have not seen a white mold before to be honest, i did some research and heard of some protein build up but i dont know if that's what you have.

cycling with fish is a risky process to beginn with you gotta realize when you cycle your tank your fish are going through tremendous stress and they might die off.. that's part of cycling. Water changes can be a good thing, just monitor the water and when the ammonia spikes too high.. do a water change..

that's the best advice i can give you.. keep it going and be patient as far as the log.. if the white stuff bothers you that much take it out and clean it off i would say.
