Temp for snails

Question
I recently puchased to yellow snails (i think thats the scientific name for them:) Anyway, I put them into an established 55 gallon tank with a water temp of 79 degrees. They made a bee line for a tunnel and haven't come out for the last ten days. Is the water to cold for them or is there another thing I should look at? Thanks

Answer
Hi Samuel,
Actually the tank temperature sounds just right for them. I have found its common for snails to go into hiding when placed in a new tank at first. Sometimes snails go into hiding occasionally. They can be lazy critters also, coming out and about only when you do water changes or if they smell food. You could try putting a well-washed piece of lettuce in the tank or a Zucchini slice and see if that brings them around. Its always a good idea also to make sure the water quality is very good. If you could test your water that would be great. Its always a good idea to check your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels just to be sure the water is clean enough for your snails and fish that you have.

And make sure to check on the snails at least daily also. Make sure they haven't died which can happen almost as frequently as common fish loss. A dead snail can pollute a tank horribly bad.

I really hope this helps and Happy fishkeeping!
Karen~
