Question
Hi there,
I recently got my first aquarium, it is a 55gal. I got the Emperor 400 as my filter. I just put water in it two days ago, in other words I just started cycling the tank. My question is I would love to put Discus in it at some point, what should I start with? I think you can put Cardinal Tetras. I was wondering what I should start with for cycling? Also what other fish if any? Any help would be great!!
Thanks ahead of time...

Answer
Hello Carolyn,

I am happy that you just got your new tank.  To cycle your tank, I would suggest some danio's as they are a hardy fish.  Please remember this when it comes to discus.  Discus are schooling fish.  You can't just get one and expect it to survive.  They are notorious for being very fussy and very complicated to keep.  The water parameters must be perfect all the time, or the fish stresses out.  Warm water, usually in the low 80's for discus, will not be suitable for other tropical fish.  Discus do not like others that well, so having other fish with them can cause them to stress out as well.  Usually, 3 to 5 discus in a heavily planted tank will help reduce their finicky behavior.

If you are insistent on getting discus, you must have at least 3.  Cardinals can be placed with them, providing they arrive at the same time, or the discus may consider them an expensive lunch.  Angelfish can be housed with discus, providing you have 3 or more of those as well.  If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask them.

Sincerely,

Adrian
