wood changing water color

Question
I just added two pieces of aquarium safe wood to my 28 gallon community tank.
It has turned the waster drastically brown. I expected some water discoloration,
but I can barely see my fish in the tank. How do I get rid of this discoloration?
Or do I have to get rid of the wood all together?

Answer
Hi Mandy:  The wood was not cured properly and the brown water is a result of tannins in the wood... Do a 20% water change and take out the wood and if possible boil it for about 2 hours... that should help it to stop "bleeding" into the tank... Cured driftwood is aged or boiled so that the tannins are removed and they do not usually cause the tank to cloud... hope this helps..dave
