White Spot on Cichlid

Question
I just recently noticed a white spot surrounded by redness on 1 of my African Cichlid, it looks like an open sore. I've had my aquarium set up for about 1 year with the same fish, I have not added any new fish of late. My ph level is 8.0 and I recently did a water treatment. Should I quarantine him and do an antibiotic treatment or can he be left in the aquarium with the rest of my fish? I did add some aquarium salt when I did my water change but that shouldn't affect it or will it?

Answer
Hello Mel,

Your problem sounds mostly like a bacterial infection. Your pH is a little high and this can cause stress and make it more susceptible to disease. To be more detailed this sounds like dropsy. This could be from bacteria, parasites or cancer.  I would recommend starting using aquarium salt at the recommended dose that it says on the back.  With the information I have this can also be slime disease. This can be cured by an external parasite medication. It would help me tremendously if I could please have a little more information.

Thanks for your time and look forward to talking to you,
Michael M.
