Ammonia in tap water

Question
Our local tap water has ammonia levels measuring up to 1.0 ppm.  I've been advised to use a product such as Prime which will remove chlorine, and neutralize the ammonia in chloramine.  I have read though that the chemicals in ammonia locking additives may be detrimantal to bio filter bacteria.  What are the best options for water sources for aquarium water changes.

Answer
Hi Tom:  Depending on how large your tank is ... the best way may vary.  What I do is I keep a 55 gallon plastic garbage can willed with water and I filter it so when I need it is already to go and I do not have to rely on chemicals.  Water that sits becomes dechlorinated and the filter helps to remove the ammonia.  It is actually less expensive in the long run to prepare your water then it is to continue to buy products like Prime.  dave
