Balloon Molly w/ poss. prolapsed intestine

Question

Molly
I have a 3 year old baloon molly who I think may have a prolapsed intestine, but I'm not sure.  I've attached a picture for your review. She seems o.k., for the most part, but is spending the majority of her time hiding now.  I think she is still eating off the bottom, but no longer swims to the middle or top.

My tank is a 12 gal Eclipse, mature tank.  In it are 1 juvenile platy, the molly, 2 cory cats and a tiny otto.

Water tmp 79. PH 7.8 Ammonia 0 Nitrite 0
3 gallons water changed every 7-10 days and gravel cleaned.
Several live plants, but no new fish or plant additions for well over a year.

Based on the pic, what do you think this is?  If a prolapsed intestine, is this fatal?  Is there anything I can do/try?  She is my favorite fish.

Thank you so much.

Answer
Hi Debbie;

Ouch. It does look like a prolapse. You could try fasting her for a few days and then feeding veggies to help clear any constipation that can make it worse. Mollies need veggies anyway. Feed tiny bits of cucumbers, romaine lettuce, cooked green beans, cooked shredded carrots, etc. Balloon mollies have a serious disadvantage with their body shape. It is not a natural thing, developed through selective breeding. The organs can't get enough space in such a compressed body. Overeating can cause obesity too, further compromising their health. The same thing happens with fancy goldfish. Just do the best you can with her. If you can separate her to another tank it would be easier to manage her diet and keep her safe. Hopefully her prolapse will reverse but there is danger of another fish damaging her tender vulnerable tissues if she stays in the main tank. I hope she does okay...
