my thermostat broke how long can fish survive without one - is there something i can do to help them

Hi Seb;

You could wrap the tank in thick towels or blankets to preserve the heat until you can get a new heater. Keep the room temperature as high as you can.

Also watch for ich after the new heater is in there and things get back to normal. A temperature drop causes stress and ich hits fish when they are stressed. Here are some links about it;
