Goldfish Eye

Question
We have a common goldfish that is at least 6+ years old (won at a carnival). It lives alone in a 10 gallon tank and it's eye has been damaged as it has 'popped out' no longer exists. It doesn't act sick, but don't know what caused this, and what can be done. Can you explain this?

Answer
Hello Robin-

Was this a recent injury? Some fish can pull their eyes on decorations, but if the tank is bare, I'd say either disease or old age. If bacteria get into the area under the lens (which is mostly fluids) they can wreak havoc and destroy the eye. If the area is raw and open-looking, add some Melafix and aquarium salt to the tank. The Melafix will help the tissues regrow, and the salt will prevent any further infections.

Be sure at feeding time your fish is getting enough to eat, because one eye will not provide him with much depth perception or accuracy in catching food.

Hope this is helpful.
