Swollen Cheeks on Gouramis

Question
I recently got a new 10 gallon fish tank and bought 3 dwarf gouramis, 5 neon tetras, and 2 bumble bee loaches. One of the gouramis cheeks are really swollen and red and on one side a white looking substance is coming out of it. This is sort of gross but it looks kinda like a pimple. lol. I added this stuff called lifeguard to the tank and it basically treats a lot of fish sickness. Should I not have done that and what is wrong with Al (gourami)? Is there anything I can do?

Answer
Hi,
I would firstly like to point out that the Gouramis will soon need a larger tank of around 20 Gallons. There is no such thing as bumble bee loaches, so could you send me a picture of them so I can identify them? Either upload them to photobucket.com and send me the links, or email them to me at kathrynhaldane@yahoo.co.uk.

To be able to diagnose a particular thing, I shall also have to see a picture of the Gourami. It could be so many things, and without a picture it's almost impossible to tell.

However, please do this:
1) Do 30% water changes every 2 or 3 days for a few weeks.
2)If possible buy test kits for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. The ammonia and nitrite should both be 0.0, as they are very poisonous to the fish, and can easily kill them. Frequent water changes will reduce it. The nitrate should be under 20ppm. Live plants will lower it.
3) Raise the filter so it is creating ripples in the surface of the water.

Hoping to hear from you soon,
Kathryn
