gill curl

My arawana developed gill curl about 5 days ago, the water is in great shape. I know it's b/c he's almost 6inches long and growning out of the 30 gallon tank. I'm picking up 180 gallon tank and wondering if it will heal itself. I heard that i will have to massage it back, if so how do i go about doing that.... thanks
