Question
My tank has been set up for about 3 months? Over a Quart? Betta Fish, 1, no filter, Poland Spring water, 3-4 weeks (when dirty)

I've had my Betta for about 3 months now and he was always energetic.  Over the past 2 days he's been LAYING on the bottom of the tank on the gravel bearly breathing...I tap on the glass to see that he's still moving and he sometimes doesnt respond, other times he'll swim around the tank once, then back to the same spot.  I cleaned the tank today, and he's doing the same exact thing.  I dont know whats wrong and he doesnt look good at all! PLEASE HELP!!

Answer
Hi Dan;

It sounds like a swim bladder problem. He has a weakened system from too few water changes I'm afraid. I'm so sorry you were not informed how to care for him and house him properly. It happens all too often these days. It seems stores are more interested in making a sale than making sure the poor betta actually lives a quality life.

Here is a web page with information on how you can help him;

Bettas really should have at least a one gallon size tank to stay healthy. Their water must be changed every week. If they are kept in a smaller container anyway, their water needs to be changed no less than twice a week. It should never be allowed to become visibly dirty. By that time ammonia (a waste toxin) has already risen to a dangerous level. The bettas in little cups in the stores should have their water changed every day, but unfortunately, most are left to burn in their own toxic waste for several days. It's very sad.

I hope he feels better soon...
