Tail rot recovery

Question
QUESTION: Hi Darryl,
I had a ammonia in the tank. With your help and Bethany's help I have eliminated the ammonia. It was not easy!In  the beginning we used Amquel, then I added bacteria increaser to the tank. I also used Melafix and Aquarium Salt to help Betta's fins and tail. He is colorful now. but his tail still looks clumped at the edge. I am still adding Melafix every day. Also, if I make a water change, should I add more Aquarium Salt? If I should, how much for 10 gallons? This is my first time using Aquarium Salt. I am also concerned because after adding the bacteria increaser, and looking very careful to the tank, I saw some changes in the water. I saw some little, almost microscopic white "things" (maybe the good bacteria?), but I also saw (just a few), microscopic white worms. What do you think this is? However, I think this bacteria increaser was the one that has eliminated the ammonia from the tank. Thanks in advance.

ANSWER: Hey Maria,

Add about 1 table spoon of salt per ten gallons of new water. The tiny white things you see are most likely air bubbles, because worm eggs and floating parasites are almost impossible to see. Also, bacteria is truly microscopic, and thus impossible to see without use of a microscope. The white stuff could also be leftover additives and such that have yet to fully dissolve.

I wouldn't fret over it unless the white stuff seems to spread, or increase in numbers.

Hope this helps! and how is the tailrot going? is it getting better, or worse, or staying the same?

QUESTION: Hi Darryl,
The tail rot is staying the same, still clumped at the edges.
Thanks a lot.

Answer
Hey,

If i were you, i'd add a day's worth of treatment for tailrot tomorrow right after a 15% water change. That should clear up the water, and reduce the ammonia, as well as help clear up the tailrot. As long as it's not getting worse, they're going to recover. As the fish fully recover, their tails will grow back. Tails regenerate slowly, and patience is key when treating tailrot. I have a sword who picked up tail rot in january, and her tail is only about half way recovered. So, i hope all goes well for you from here.
