Gravel for aquarium

Question
 I like the look of gravel in my tank and it seems to give my fish something to entertain themselves with.  I also have read that it encourages the growth of good bacteria.  However, is it true that goldfish can choke on gravel?  Should I remove all my gravel from my goldfish tank?

Answer
Hi Liz;

Many experts recommend that gravel pieces be too large for the fish to pick up in their mouths or small enough that they could swallow them and go through the digestive system. It really is up to you. I know there are other people that have had trouble with goldfish getting rocks stuck in their throats, but mine actually never have.

The gravel is a good place for beneficial bacteria as long as it isn't too deep. When deeper than an inch or so, waste can accumulate and a different type of bacteria (anaerobic) will grow and release toxic gasses. Just don't overfeed, keep it vacuumed weekly with 25% water changes and it should be fine.
