fish swimming on its side

Hi,
My betta fish is in a small fish bowl under a light.  He is swimming on his side.  I tried changing the water and giving him more food.  I don't understand this. Please help!

Hi Jackie,
  Does he eat the food?  Only put in food that he eats right away. Never put in food for him to "eat later".  

  What is the temperature of the water in the bowl?
