A sick Betta fish, and a worried owner

Question
I am new at caring for fish, however a week ago my girlfriend gave me a male betta fish, a tank, and a ghost shrimp.  For a week, they were both doing very well- my betta would make bubble nests at the water's surface.  However this afternoon I checked on my betta and noticed he had gone from his beautiful red to a sickly orange, and acquired white fuzz on his tail.  He had True fungus.  You would not believe how depressed I was about it.  My ghost shrimp had shed its skin, and because I didn't clean it out in time it grew mold and infected my fish.  I bought something to cure my betta, cleaned the tank thoroughly, and did everything I was suppose to.  For a while, my betta was acting find and swimming around, but recently it began digging its head into the giant beads I bought for decoration (they're giant red beads, similar to the beads from a Mancala game) and sitting there idle.  I've talked with people and they said it should take a few days for him to recover, but I'm worried my fish might not make it.  Is burying itself in gravel normal for a sick betta?  If so, what else should I expect?  Please keep in mind, I'm new at betta care.

Answer
Hi Trevor,
A sick betta will stop eating, and will go to the bottom of a tank.  You didn't mention what medication you are giving him, as it could be a reaction to the medication.  Betta'a aren't like other fish and you must be very careful how you dose them.  If you are treating with Malafix, be extremely careful how much you put in his tank.  If I  knew what you were treating him with, and the size of your tank I could help you more.  Betta's love clean water, do not be afraid to change his water, and I mean all of it depending on what size bowl he is in, or aquarium....use a good water conditioner.  You will have to get back to me with more details.  Does he have silk plants that he can rest on?  Betta's love to sleep on leaves...One thing I can tell you is I wouldn't put a betta in with ghost shimp.  A male betta will make a nest when in good health, and will attack anything that is in his site.
