Male or Female?

Question
QUESTION: Hello,
I just bought 2 fishes today and i forgot to ask what the sex was. I bought 1 silver molly and 1 gold molly. I wanted to know how i could determine what the sex of each of them are.  anything that would guarantee me on determining the sex. Is there any signs that i should look for? Is there a pattern on the fish? And if they are opposite sex, would they mate?

ANSWER: Hi Sanad;

If you have one of each sex, you will probably have babies eventually. Or, if they are females and were with a male before you took them home, they will probably have babies in a few weeks anyway. To tell the difference, look at the bottom rear fin on each fish. Not the tail, but the single fin near the fish's vent behind the two fins on the bottom. If it's fanned out it's a female. If it's more pointy, it's a male. Here is a web page with a diagram;

Good luck and have fun! (I hope your fish do too ;-) )

QUESTION: Hey Chris,
Thanks for replying to my email so quick! I have figured it out that both of my mollies are females. Which it comes to a second question. My gold mollie is acting crazy! She is swimming at her fastest. and she is not even stopping. all i see her doing is swimming like if something was chasing her. she is doing this especially against the water that is coming from the filter and hitting the water. on the other hand my silver mollie is all calm. at first i thought the gold mollie was trying to perform an act towards the the silver mollie (attract it to mate with it) but now since i know that there both females, im questioning why she is acting up. i dont think that she is pregnant because she doesnt look fat. and i also know that the aquarium is not harming her because this is how she was acting when i barely got her. Do you have any clue why she is acting up?
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Sanad;

She may just have an extra hyper personality. Some fish do. Provide more hiding places such as plants for her. She may just feel more exposed than she is comfortable with. Each fish is different.

Also check the ammonia and nitrite levels to be sure there isn't something going on in there that she is just extra sensitive to. Some fish feel it far before the others when there is a problem beginning.

I hope everything is okay...
