fish diets

Question
I have been trying to save money by avoiding expencive pet store foods and going with regular shrimp,beefheart,peas and things you find in a normal grocery store.that being said somone suggested that i feed my cichlids halibut or cod becouse it was on sale...if i feed my fish other fish like these am i just setting up a countdown till they get a disease or parasite, or would it be like eating a fish in the wild.or maybe it should be cooked or prepared..im lost lil help please.
