Question
Hi. I have a Blue Oranda which is a type of goldfish. He was in an aquarium with 5 other fish and has been attacked. I have now removed him and he's in a bowl of his own now. He now has one eye and very little fins, his top fin and tail are fine and he is swimming around normally and eating fine. What i would like to find out is what to treat the water with to stop any infection occuring in his eye socket? I have read that his fins should heal and grow back in due time.

Answer
Kelly,

Rule of fish thumb, don't treat a fish with medication if there isn't a problem. If you do, then later in time the medication won't work. I would put a little bit of aquarium salt to his water in the bowl. Never put more than 1 teaspoon in 1 gallon of water. Make sure you dissolve the salt before putting it in his water. Yes, as long as he has a little bit of fin still it will grow back. Might take 9 months to a year for then to fully regrow. If he ends up with an infection, any antibiotic will do. Just follow all instructions on the bottle. Just keep a close eye on him for about a week. If no infection by then then you are probably safe. Just keep his water very clean and do daily water changes.
