Clown Knife Fish

Question
QUESTION: I recently have added a 4-5" Clown Knife Fish to my aquarium.  I know about this fish and how big it can get, I'm aware and able to handle.  But where my problem occurs is that he has yet to eat!

Temperature in tank is staying at 78 degrees.  He has area to hide to feel safe with plants around it as well. His tankmates at the moment are 2 blue guaramies that are 3.5", a large 7" goldfish, and 3 danios (used to start tank originally and don't mind if they end up missing).

I dropped in some very small guppies and he doesn't even seem interested.  I waited 3 days after he was in tank before feeding.  Was this to soon?  I have also had the light off when trying to feed last night but turned back on this morning.  Want to make sure I'm not screwing something up.

Please help!

ANSWER: Hi Rich

It is likely you won't see him eat, they eat at night. If he looks and acts healthy otherwise, don't worry about him.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Thanks for your response... Since I put the guppies in the tank, they have been in for four nights in a row.  There is only 1 I can not find this morning.  So I guess my follow up question is should I keep on keeping the guppies in the same tank or set up a seperate tank with a bubbler in it?

Answer
Hi Rich

If the Guppies were meant as food for the Clown Knife, I would leave them in the same tank. I have large Cichlids that I generally feed flakes and pellets to. However, when my Guppies and Zebra Danios began multiplying so rapidly, I set up a tank for the fry to raise as feeders. I feed about 15 of them a week to my Oscars, Firemouths, Convicts etc. They often stay in the tanks for many days before they all disappear.

With the feeder fish, try to also feed some frozen meat foods to your Clown Knife. He's a predator fish, but will eat frozen shrimp, krill etc.

Hope this helps, good luck!
