Fellow Canadian needs advice on 75 gallon

Question
QUESTION: Hello Harrylal.  I am going to purchase a 75 gallon for tropical fish.  I already have an established fancy goldfish tank at that size and love it.

This time, never owning tropical fish except my Bettas, I would love to have at least a couple of angelfish.  Would they be good in this size tank?  How many could I have that wouldn't fight?  I don't even want a male to pester a female!  Everyone has to get along in this house, ha ha.

Do you have some stocking ideas for the tank for the future?  I will be doing another fishless cycling like I'm doing right now with a 29 gallon.

I love the looks of cory catfish, angelfish so far.  If you can go by that, it would be great.  I want no fighting, fin nipping, male constantly after female.  Perhaps it sounds like a long order?  In my 29 gallon, I'm planning on 6 Blue Neon guppies, 6 cory catfish, and 1 dwarf gourami.  Heard they'd all get along.  Hope so.

Thank you for your future suggestions!

Paula

ANSWER: Hey Paula,
I, myself have kept angelfish at one point and their great fish to keep. Talking from personal experience, I would say that you should buy minimum three because they tend to be less aggressive when their in groups, and if they are aggressive, which i doubt, it is only towards each other.  Also, 75 gallons is PERFECT because I kept mine in a 72 gallon and they lived a long time. Angelfish are more comfortable swimming around in taller tanks so 75 gallons sound good. The only warning I'm giving you is, if you do keep a male, they tend to mate very frequently and can get very aggressive towards other mates in the tank. So just try to be wise with your decisions.
Anyways, Best of luck and keep me posted.

QUESTION: Hi Harrylal, thanks for the info!  Can I keep 3 female angelfish, then?  I certainly don't want ANY strife.  Can 3 males be kept together?  Are females as colourful as males?

Also, do you have any stocking ideas to go with the angelfish in this size tank?  I'd also like cory catfish on the bottom (6 at least).  I figure I can get about 70" total of fish in that tank.

I don't know where in Canada you are but I'm in Southern Ontario and Big Al's Aquarium Services suggest a 2217 Eheim canister filter for the 75 gallon.  It's $200.00.  I was hoping for a hang-on-back filter but they said it would end up being more expensive in the long run.  I have 2 canister filters on the goldfish aquarium but didn't want to have to pay so much for a canister filter again.

Thanks for answering all my questions!

Answer
Hey Paula,
You have two options for your angelfish. Either keep 3 females, or 2 females and 1 male. Just make sure you don't keep 2 males and 1 female or else it might not have the best outcome. Also 3 males might be a problem since an alpha male might have to be determined.

Colour wise, males usually tend to be more colourful and also grow a lot faster and bigger then females. Males are usually longer in shape and females and usually round.

Now when it comes to tank mates, almost all community fish are compatible including mollies, guppies, gournami's and larger tetras. Just make sure you don't buy anything that would fit in the Angel's mouth.

I live in Brampton which is also in Southern Ontario. Big Al's is where I do my shopping and buy my fish. For my 72 gallon tank, i have a 2215 Eheim Canister filter installed and it is very effective! But I would suggest you buy the 2217, even if it costs more because it will keep your water clean for a long time.

P.s. Can you rate my answers?

Thank you.
