Question
I have had my female betta, Moon, for years and I have her in a 2.5 gallon,no filter. My friend gave me a male, and she told me there was no problem because he did not care for the ones at her house but I guess he cared for Moon, because when I put them together he immediately started attempting to mate with her. That really frightened her I think, because she hid in this little cave thing I have.I thought that was the end of it but now she is getting really big. What should I do if she makes eggs? What do I do if she is bloated? What do I do if she makes eggs and does not care for them? She is scared of him!HELP!

Answer
Katrina,
Unfortunately, as you found out, your friend was wrong. Never put a male and female together unless you are breeding them. I would remove the male and put him in his own tank, or give him back to your friend. Unless the two actually mate, there will be no babies. If she is with eggs, and no male is around, her body will absorb them. The female is not the one that will take care of the eggs, the male does it. If you do intend to breed, let me know so that I can make sure you do it the right way. For now, I would just remove the male.
