Removing Cichlids from tank

23 11:10:01

Question
I am a relatively new Cichlid owner (about 6 months). I had a 90 gallon tank with 15-20 African Cichlids to start with. I studied countless web sites and doing a lot of research prior to purchasing the cichlids.
My issue is that one of my cichlids keeps breeding and I am stuck with more babies in my tank than I can count. My tank has several rocks through-out the aquarium which seemingly makes it nearly impossible to catch and remove the smaller fish. I am very concerned since my tank is extremely overcrowded.
What is the best recourse to take here? Should I just let nature take it's course and leave the tank as is?
Is there a more simple way to remove the fish without having to take out all my rocks (probably about 150 pounds)first?
Thank you for your time and help,
Gabe
p.s. because of the overcrowding i am doing water changes and filter cleaning more frequently

Answer
Hi Gabe,

First of all, your question was in the question pool today. I know it's probably been quite awhile since you asked it, so I want to ask you not to hold it against me for the other expert's tardiness in responding.  It was just given to the rest of us today, so I picked your question as soon as it arrived. :)  Rate me appropriately, please, as I strive to give professional answers, in a timely fashion...and please don't blame me for the late response.  It wasn't asked of me, but of another expert, initially.

You can always take the rock out and remove them and then put it back and start fresh, or you can do it the simple way, by making a fish trap.

There are some great links out there for 2 liter bottle fish traps.  The way I do it, is I take 2 two liter bottles and I cut the bottom off of one, and the top off of the other.

I throw the bottom part into the trash can, leaving me with one bottle which still has a top and twist on cap and another top.

I take the top bottle and I insert it into the cut bottom, tip up (tip same direction as the tip on the top of the bottle) and then I seal it with aquarium sealant and wait 24 hours for it to dry.  Fish can go in, but they cannot get out.

I bait with fish food, and voilla...tons of baby fish.

Here is a video on how to make a fish trap. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6P_hI7drGSQ&feature=player_embedded

I can add to his directions.  Don't use the duct tape.  Use aquarium sealant.  Far safer.

I hope this has helped and that my answer was professional as well as friendly.:)

If you have additional questions, please feel free to post a followup.

Happy fish-keeping!
