Jack Dempsey injury and fungus?

Question
So about 8 months ago my Jack Dempsey somehow injured his top lip like a chunk of it is missing, shortly thereafter a cotton like growth appeared, I have tried at different times treating this and sometimes it gets a bit better and sometimes not, plus the lip has not been able to heal. He is currently in a 20 gallon tank as it was what I had when someone gave him to me as they were getting rid of him. I recently got a 55 gallon to move him to as he should be in a bigger tank, but really want to get him healed up first. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have tried pima fix once, and maracyn-plus once neither helped much. tried maracyn oxy a couple times And it seems to help some but it said to treat for no more than 5 days. So after stopping treatment it went back to the way it was. plus his lip won't heal I just tried it again and this time didn't seem to help as much. I change 25% water every 2-3 weeks and add aquarium salt each time. Please help so I can get him healed up and into his new "home".

Answer
Brian,    What is happening here is you ave 2 types of infections going on. One is bacterial, one is fungal. Real quick when your adding salt it is only the amount for the amount of water you removed. It is a mineral and builds up in your system the only way it is removed is through water change not evaporation. I would give him a week to rest and then do a 50% water change no salt this time. You are going to go and get tetracycline and coppersafe. Take out your carbon because of the cycline. You can use both at same time. Coppersafe is also a mineral only removed by water change therefore if you do a water change a day after your last dose of tetracycline make sure you add back the coppersafe that approximating the gallons removed. O.K. coppersafe first.....next day first dose of cycline. The day after you finish cycline do you water change 50%. Put your carbon back into your filter a new one so as not to spread infection back to tank and you coppersafe you removed. Hopefully this will take care of it. Getting him into that bigger tank definitely a good idea. Get the tank set up if you have the room while he is being medicated. I personally would add cycle it is a live bacteria and speeds up your new tank syndrome and lets it cycle down without fish. Even if he is not all the way healed yet move him in a couple weeks. Keep me posted Good Luck, Tina
