Question
20 gal. tank.  I had four fish 2 large goldfish male and female .  2 Moors. I remove the largest goldfish to a ten gal. tank.  He was acting awfully frisky and almost knocked the female out.  The female is swimming peacefully and suddenly goes crazy. Darting around.  The moors are sitting on the bottom.  I fed them peas  just in case they have eaten too much.  I put Epsom salt in the water, checked the ph which is 6.8 what am I doing wrong ?.

Answer
Barbara, Your first problem is a common one. Goldfish need big water. That is way too many goldies for a 20 gallon tank. A healthy goldfish kept in the correct conditions can live over twenty year, I also have a Black mor her name is Molly she lives with an algae eater in a 35 gallon tank. She is 9 years old. They put out much more wastes then with tropical's. Is your 10 gallon a new set up? Even if it isn't I would check my ammonia level's. I would move you black mor back and check them ammonia levels. You can bring them down with a good water change. If its new I would do a 30% at least once a week until your cycled out and your ecosystem is established. Goldfish will outgrow your tanks. So if you do get him in there they will not be in there long or your going to have problems with frequent water changes (stressful to your babies), scale burning and septicemia. They could just be adjusting to each other. They are not a very territorial fish. Unless they have been alone for awhile and have some size they can be pushy. If your ammonia level's are good you can try again just watch them levels and keep in mind with them the bigger the tank is the better. Good luck, Tina
