identify a fish

Question
my fiance caught a fish at charlestown harbor cornwall uk, and i dont know what it is...

its about 7-7.5",   i has a black to very dark green back, then as it goes from top to bottom, (not head to tail)it blends to a gold, then has a silvery underbelly....some one told us it was pollock is that right

  Unfortunately without a photograph it is pretty impossible for me to say.  Keep in mind that there are over 28,000 known species of fishes...  sorry.
