Question
I noticed for the past week or so that my male Betta had a fat belly. His water was always kept clean and he was fed flakes twice a day...and seemed to be eating fine until yesterday evening I noticed he didn't swim for his food right away as usual. I came home from work and he was dead on the bottom of the tank:( Could his fat belly and whatever caused the fat belly be the reason for his death? :(

Answer
Hello Victoria,
A large belly can mean one of three things - overfeeding, which is a common killer for beginner fish. Dropsy, which is a disease where the stomach fills with liquid until the scales begin to pop out and the fish dies. Dropsy is most commonly caused by poor water quality. Or Swim Bladder Disease, which is close to the same as being overfed, except to the point where they have eaten so much in so little time, that their stomach is pressing up against their swim bladder and they can't float properly. This can be avoided by making sure you don't overfeed, and fasting your betta once a week.
Sorry about Turq, and i hope this helps you with future fish.
