Taming a budgie

Question
QUESTION: Hello again I have another question it is how do you tame a budgie in the breeding mode?  I want to breed my budgie but I want to tame him too.  If I have to get him out of the breeding mode to tame him then how do I get him back in the breeding mode?  Thanks!

ANSWER: I would do one at a time.  If you try to do both at the same time, he may give up on either the breeding or taming because he can get distracted.  If you've started taming him, keep at it.  If you take him out of "breeding mode" he might not go back for a while, but he will next time.  You may just have to wait a few months.  He may also pick you as a mate instead of a female, but eventually turn his attention back to his own mate.  Also, if he's old enough to breed, he may be harder to tame.  I would try taming him first, because the longer you wait, the harder it will be to do.

Answer
Taking out a nest box if you have one is the first step, so that they have no where to nest.  You may also want to keep the lights on for less time.  They breed during Spring and Fall, so if they think that it's Winter, they think that breeding season is over.  Some people try adjusting the temperature to simulate this change in seasons, but it would have to be a pretty drastic change from say 80oF to 70oF.  It can work, but it can also stress them and make them more vulnerable to illness.

Most of the time, they come out of breeding mode pretty easily.  They can get stubborn though, and it can be hard to tell.  Look at his cere (the colorful area above the beak); during the breeding season, the colors are very bold and the cere can look almost swollen.  After they finish breeding, the colors tend to fade.  This change could be from one shade of blue to a slightly lighter shade, or it could change to almost white.  No two budgies are alike, so his change may be very drastic, or it might not look like it changed at all.
