Question
Hey! Spotty is a Budgie (possibly a boy) because he's only 5 months old. He's going through molting, and I was just wondering how to get him to stop biting me. He doesn't always bite me, When he's out o his cage, he doesn't. When I gently try to do anything to him in or beside his cage, he's quite frightened of me. Any tips?

Answer
Hello Liora! Its a little too early to tell if Spotty is a boy because budgie usually mature around 1 to 1 1/2 years. His cere is probably pink or purplish. when he matures his cere will become a vibrant blue, but im sure you already knew that. Most budgies consider their cage as a place of comfort and security. A big hand invading their space terrifies them because they cant escape. Also many birds become territorial around their cage. For the same reasons, they want to protect their space. Their space should be respected but being too territorial can become a bad behavior. Have your budgie realize that you invading his space is a good thing. Put millet spray on top of his cage along with other treats such as cooked pasta, parsley lettuce, grasses, other herbs or hard boiled egg. When you go to give him a treat have a certain cue that you say to make him listen. Taming is patience and time. He will soon realize that you have come to give him food and not hurt him. Let him know that instead of being frightened of you near his cage, he can be relaxed knowing hes getting treats. Positive reinforcement always works best with birds. Don't do any thing to get yourself bitten. If you decrease the number of times you get bitten, he will soon forget how to bite, because he simply wont need to. If you know hes going to bite, stop what you are doing. Watching them and learning when they are going to bite is the most you can do to reduce yourself getting bitten. good luck
