Answer
Hello Delena! Most parakeets that are brought home are going to be a little nervous for some time. Since Faith was probably not hand-tamed, taming her to be cuddly will be very challenging. Their fear of humans has already set in and view them as a dangerous creature. Taming a bird is not all about just cuddling and petting but also trust and respect. Even though you cant handle your bird up close and personal, you two can still share a very special bond. It takes much time and patience. Talking to her is the first step. When you enter the room, call her name and say "pretty bird" or "are you a good girl?" Try bringing her treats such as millet spray or parsley. She may not take it from your hand at first but if you hold it out long enough she will be unable to resist and will overcome her fear of hands. You message to Faith is to let her know that you and your hands are their to help and care for her not to hurt her. Some people grab their birds when they want them to come out of their cage or when they want them to go back in. Grabbing is going to make your bird loose all trust in you. Just put yourself in the birds position. Would you want a big hand coming out to grab you not knowing you are going to live or die? Probably not ^^; Let the cage door hang open when your around and let her come out on her own. Since its only the 6th day she still may be a little shy coming out. But after a while she will hopefully come out when ever she can. If she does happen to fall on the floor, gently crawl to her and with a large cupped hand, scoop her up. This will reduce you getting bitten and she will feel much more safe. Move her to her cage when ever she falls to the floor. This is how i though my keet to trust my hand. They see it as a helpful thing when they fall to the ground, like a birdie elevator! When she puffs up after you come into the room, that means shes relived to see you. But give it time. After a few months she will be a little more open but it may even take a year or more for her to completely trust you. It also depends on how much time you are willing to spend with her. The more time, the faster she will become tame. Wait to handle her until she trusts you a lot more.
i wish you and Faith good luck!
