Question
What's the best way to transport budgies? I've got to move cross country and want to take my birds. Would budgies do okay on an airplane?
THanks,

Answer
Hello Glo! If an airplane is your only choice of moving across country then be prepared to spend lots of money and a lot of planning. Transporting such a small animal on a plane is of course dangerous, exausting and stressful. Birds are very sensitive to drafts or cold air and the place where they store the animals will be chilly. People operating the animal care dont know much about the health do be sure to tell them regardless. A car trip would be much better. Of course you would spend many hours driving and such. Rule out what the goods and bads are of car and airplane moving. Do you want whats best for your budgies? Are you willing to do what ever you can to help them move?
Its not impossible and this one person i knew traveled across state with 16 of her cockatiels!
Airplane: A cage that is sturdy and secure will be good. I recomend the Flying South bird carrier. Its around 50-60$ but is worth the money. Its a good size and has a thick fabric covering. Three roll-up flap are on the sides of the carrier. So if you want one flap open for air and the other two closed you can do so. It can be carried like a backpack or a handle. A small storage pouch is located in the top of the carrier. Comes with two dishes. Make sure the keets have some toys in their cage and a nice bowl of food and a water bottle. You may even want to line the inside with fleece, wool, or other heat containing fabric. tell your budgies you love them and everything will be ok. Talk with the air attendent who will be in charge of the animals. With a set up plan, they should have a comfortable flight. But your birds are still at risk of stress, drafts and rough handling.

Car: The safest way. This requires research though. If travling in a car and if you plan on staying in a hotel, make sure the hotel allows animals. If not, simple camping will have to do or the good ol' sleep in the car. You will be able to check on your birds and their safty is garenteed with you. A medium carrier will do fine on a road trip. Some toys, food and water will satisfy them for the time being. It may be more fun to travel with your birds. Although it may take longer to get to your destination. Both ways are challenging but dont give up, you have every right to take your birds with you. I hope iv helped, and please tell me what your planning to do, i would love to know! I want to help anyway i can to make sure you have a safe trip with your keets. :D Esp. since i want to know how the keets are after travaling, just another amazing story of bird travel!  good luck!
