oops forgot one. The cage has a deep bottom and I was wondering if the food and water can be placed there instead of on the sides.  It would help keep some of the inevitable mess from leaving the cage.

You can do this, but you'll have to clean the food and water dishes very frequently because their poop will get in their dishes if they're on the bottom.  Just try to avoid putting them in places like directly under perches or toys so they don't sit right over the dishes and poop in them.  It won't keep all of it out, but it keeps things less messy.
