parakeet egg laying

Question
Hi, I believe my parakeet may lay an egg soon, but I'm not completly sure. I only have one parakeet and no males so I don't think she's going to have a chick, but is it possible that she just lays one? and if so, how can I tell? Also, why is she laying one is she does? Iv'e only had two parakeets and one was a male so I haven't experienced this before. If she does lay an egg what should i do with it?

Answer
Cheyenne,

It is quite normal for a female bird of any species to lay eggs without a male present. These eggs will be infertile and you should just discard them (throw them away). Birds do not get pregnant like mammals in that they do not show signs of laying an egg until the egg is on the way out.
