Question
hey :) I have a 3 week old budgie that I'm attempting to hand raise
I gave it it's first feed this morning as I couldn't feed it lastnight because the crop wouldn't empty, so I warmed it in my hand and saw the crop decrease in size

I fed it this morning with a hand rearing mix I'd previously used on past chics but it rejected the food so I used a syringe and at one point some of the mix came out of the nostrils so I'm guessing that some of the mix got into the windpipe.

I'm administering the mix via the side of the mouth and giving the budgie breaks.

the crop wouldn't fill to full size after 2mls of the mix and I couldn't continue because I had to go to college, should I be concerned?

Answer
Jess,

At 3 weeks old your budgie should be happily eating 3-4 times a day. Have you checked the temp of the formula you are feeding? I would focus on figuring out why the crop stayed full, usually because the formula was to cold and the bird could not digest it, which can lead to sour crop. Is the budgie eating from any other source, like its mother? If not, I would probably recommend that you contact a local breeder, vet, or petstore that can look at your formula and figure out whats going on with the bird.
