Question
Hello I own a 2/4 year old male ring neck dove, I am wanting to get him a friend as I dont have alot of time to spend with him,(I have owned him for two months I bought him at a yard sale). They have some lovely grey male ring necks at my locale petsmart, I was wodnering if I got one(or two) would it get along with mine even thou they are both males as they keep the males together in the petstore?

Answer
Hello.  Thanks for posting your question.

I would not recommend you keep buying birds if you do not have a lot of time to spend with them.

To answer your question, it depends on the individual personalities of the birds.  Some males will fight with each other, sometimes causing injuries (they can peck eyes, peck feathers/skin until bleeding, etc.).  If you do put them together, you need to ensure you have adequate space so they can flee from one another if fighting does break out.  You'd be better off getting a female and, if you don't want baby doves, throw the eggs away when any are laid.

Perhaps these doves get along in the pet store when you are there, but do you know what happens when you aren't there?  Often times, clutch mates of the same sex will get along together because they've been together all their life.  This is a chance you'll have to take if you want to buy the doves.
