Is my budgie ill?

Hi, about a week ago the male started attacking the female, they have been together for more that a year. I separated them and now the male lies on his perch, his head hanging. Is he pining (he can still see her and talk to her in the cage next to him) or is he ill? Why did he attack her? Thank you for your effort.

Hello Carin and thank you for your post.
I would take him into a certified Avian or an Exotic Animal Vet.  I am concerned about his head hanging.  He may not be feeling well, which could cause him to attack the female.
Also, keep in mind that vreeding season is coming up, and his hoemones could be raging.
