Question
Hello-I know it is better to get organic veggies butI was just curious if I am cleaning my veggies for my Lovebird Mims correctly---certain veggies like
peppers, broccoli, & sumtimes corn I give raw...I place them under hot water and soak then rinse with cold.....also for romain lettuce I do the same...is this ok? Also, what about pre packaged fresh veggies (not frozen!)=THX

Answer
Hi, Alana,

I'm sorry for responding late to your question(s).  I was hospitalized and trying to catch up.

Organic veggies aren't always the best...it just depends on where they come from.  Also depends on how the foods are packaged.  If raw, washing them with warm/tepid water using a veggie brush should be sufficient.  Aside from fresh, raw, frozen foods are best as the freezing process locks in the nutrition of the foods.  Prepackaged fresh veggies can be good or not so good...read the labels to see what occurs during the packaging process.  Sometimes packaging process removes nutritional value of the foods, so it just depends.  Romain lettuce has no nutritional value...use greens such as kale, collard greens, spinach, etc., and serve cleaned and moist.  Learn to read and understand labeling for the best results.  Learn as much as you can about good nutrition (human nutrition is good for parrots) and judge accordingly.  Remember, beans/lentils must be thoroughly cooked, but most other things are best raw, fresh, clean.  Frozen would be second choice, with canned foods a big no-no.
